Qual è il suo segno zodiacale? Si riconosce nei suoi tratti salienti?
Capricorno. Mi riconoso in tutte  le “qualità” di questo segno!
È superstizioso? E se si, riguardo a cosa? Segue qualche particolare rituale a riguardo?
Non sono superstizioso, perché porta sfortuna…
È una persona spirituale? E se si, in che modo?
Si, sento da sempre la forza dello Spirito nel Mondo, e la presenza di un principio creatore. Per me l’unico modo di connettere con Lui è la preghiera, però in modo intimo, in solitudine.
Ha mai invidiato qualcuno? E se si, chi?
Sicuramente la gente più felice di me. Ma “invidiare” non è la parola giusta. Per me il modello della persona felice è stato Artur Rubinstein.
Che lavoro avrebbe fatto, se non fosse diventato un direttore d’orchestra??
Volevo essere medico, e ci penso sempre con nostalgia.
La sua famiglia ha influenzato le sue scelte?
Forse nel fatto che miei genitori suonavano entrambi, ma non mi hanno forzato nella scelta.
Qual è il suo ricordo più caro ?
La nascita dei miei due figli.
Qual è il profumo che associa alla sua infanzia?
Quello degli alberi in autunno.
Qual è il momento in cui si è sentito più orgoglioso?
Quando ho portato tutta mia famiglia ad una mia recita al Metropolitan di New York.
La sua più grande delusione?
Visto che siete una rivista musicale, non posso rispondere.
C’è qualcosa che manca nella sua vita attualmente? E se si, cosa?
Alcuni millioni di euro per finanziare i miei progetti.

Molto!
Che cosa le fa più paura?
La solitudine…finire la vita da solo.
Che cosa considera noioso?
Tutte le forme di mediocrità.
Che cosa la fa ridere di cuore?
Adoro tutte le forme di umorismo, ma soprattutto l’umore in tempo reale, piuttosto che le “barzellette”.
Crede di più nell’amore o nell’amicizia?
L’amore è un fiore fragile con profumo forte. L’amicizia è un albero che può vivere fino alla fine, pero anche l’albero si deve curare.
Ha un sogno ricorrente?
Volare con il corpo.
Quanto conta per lei il denaro?
Quel tanto che mi permetta di fare vivere tutti i miei cari con agio.
In che cosa è più spendaccione?
Diciamo che sarei un collezionista d’arte…quando posso, certo non potrei  mai avvicinarmi a un Leonardo da Vinci. Sono però interessato a giovani artisti o artista del passato da costi …accessibili…
Colleziona qualcosa? E se si, come ha iniziato questa collezione?
Devo dire, guardando la mia casa…. Le partiture musicali ! Ho iniziato quando avevo 6 anni…
Quali sono le sue letture preferite?
Tutto, mi interesse la bella scrittura. Per questo, non c’è limite di epoca o di lingua, ma solo la qualità intrinseca del testo.
Quale o quali città sente più vicine al suo modo di essere?
Venezia, New York. So che sono estremamente diverse, pero è cosi…
Qual è il suo colore preferito?
Dico sempre “blu”. Ma a volta un bell’ arancione-rosso mi fa stare bene.
E il suo fiore preferito?
La rosa!!!! O meglio dire “le rose” in tutte le sue varietà.
Direttore d’orchestra preferito/i?
Leonard Bernstein….Carlos  Kleiber. Ci aggiungo il mio primo maestro, Franco Ferrara (anche se l’ho conosciuto solo un anno, quando avevo 18 anni, pero è stato decisivo)
Qual è il primo disco che ha comprato?
Ne avevo tanti a casa, tutti di musica classica, ma il primo che ho comprato è “The Wall” dei Pink Floyd.
Il film che ha amato di più?
« Hook », di Spielberg, anche per la colonna sonora.
La sua stagione preferita e perché?
La primavera, perché solo qui si vede la potenza creatrice della natura.
Com’è il suo rapporto con la tecnologia e qual è il gadget elettronico di cui non può fare a meno?
Sono sempre stato un “geek” Quando ero molto piccolo, disegnavo “computers” su scatole di carta. Il mio gadget preferito è sempre l’ultima versione del mio smartphone preferito.
Qual è il suo atteggiamento verso la televisione?
Uso la televisione solo per guardare film. Quando sono in giro per alberghi non tocco nemmeno il telecomando.
Com’è il suo rapporto con la politica?
Prudente. Non trovo oggi una personalità che mi farebbe venire la voglia di “fare’” politica. Forse a livello locale, si. Per esempio, essere il sindaco del mio piccolo villaggio dove ho la casa di campagna.
Ha delle cause che le stanno particolarmente a cuore?
La giustizia. Da quella dipende tutto il resto, incluso i problemi del nostro rapporto alla natura.
Giorno o notte?
Notte.
Qual è la situazione che considera più rilassante?
Essere con amici in un buon ristorante.
Ci racconti la sua giornata ideale.
Scrivere musica la mattina, di pomeriggio andare a dirigere il brano che ho scritto il mattino, e la sera festeggiar tutto in una buona osteria.
Qual è la colonna sonora della sua vita di tutti i giorni?Come musicista, ovviamente questo cambia ogni giorno.
La sua preferita, fra le sue composizioni, e perché?
Ho tante composizioni preferite, in fatti un pezzo “preferito” può divenire una tortura se si ripete in continuazione. Mentre per la musica, come per il resto, è necessaria la diversità.
La vacanza o il viaggio che vorrebbe fare?
Visitare l’Africa. Ma è troppo grande per una vita.
Come definirebbe il suo rapporto col cibo?
Adoro mangiare e cucinare. Non posso immaginare la vita senza il cibo.
Dieta mediterranea, cucina macrobiotica o fast food?
Mediterranea da sempre.
Il suo piatto preferito?
La “bouillabaisse”
Sa cucinare? Qual è la sua specialità? E qual è il piatto che cucina più spesso?
La “Bouillabaisse”. Ma è lungo e complicato. Faccio anche diversi modi di pollo.
Vino rosso o bianco?
Esclusivamente rosso.
Qual è il posto in cui la cucina è la peggiore in assoluto?
Per me in Inghilterra…
La musica è stata una vocazione?
Assolutamente sì.
Cosa vorrebbe che una persona che non conosce la sua arte ascoltasse?
La mia opera “Monte Cristo”.
Se le fosse concesso di scegliere un’opera che non ha ancora diretto, quale sarebbe?
La “donna senza ombra” di Richard Strauss.
Le piace il successo? Fino a che punto?
Mi piace perché dà libertà di scegliere tante cose: titolo, artisti con cui lavorare, e abbastanza tempo per farlo. Ma vedo oggi che quelli che hanno più successo non hanno più il tempo di lavorare e provare.
Che cosa fa un’ora prima di salire sul podio?
Non ho abitudini, sono sempre diverso. Dipende dal giorno.
Che cosa non manca mai nel suo camerino?
L’acqua.
Che cosa pensa quando si guarda nello specchio?
Chi sei?
Il suo umore al momento?
Impazienza, come sempre. Sono sempre impaziente di scrivere musica.
Qual è il suo motto?
L’ho inventato io: “sono sempre felice di essere occupato, dal momento che sono occupato ad essere felice”.

I’m not superstitious, because it’s bad luck….
Are you a spiritual person? And if yes, in what way?
Yes, I have always felt the power of spirit in the world, and the presence of a creative principle. For me, the only way to connect with him is through prayer, though intimate and alone.
Have you ever envied someone? And if yes, who?
Definitely people who are happier than me. But “envy” is not the right word. For me, the model of the happy person is Artur Rubinstein.
What would you have done, hadn’t you become a conductor?
I wanted to be a doctor, and I always think about it with nostalgia.
Did your family influence your choices?
Maybe in the fact that my parents both played instruments, but they didn’t force me.
Which is your most cherished memory?
The birth of my two children.
What is the scent you associate with your childhood?
That of the trees in autumn
What’s the moment you felt the proudest?
When I brought my whole family to one of my performances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
What’s your greatest disappointment?
Since you are a music magazine, I cannot answer that.
Is there anything missing in your life today? And if yes, what?
A few million euros to finance my projects.
Do you get emotional easily?
Very much so!
What are you afraid of the most?
Ending life alone.
What do you find boring?
All forms of mediocrity.
What makes you laugh heartily?
I love all forms of humor, but especially real-time humor, rather than “jokes”.
Do you believe more in love or friendship?
Love is a fragile flower with a strong fragrance. Friendship is a tree that can live to the end, however, the tree must also be cared for.

Flying with my body.
How important is money to you?
As much as it allows me to make all my loved ones live in comfort.
Which is the item you like spending money on the most?
When I can, it would be art, but I never buy a Leonardo da Vinci: rather young artists or affordable artists from the past.

I must say, looking at my home…. Music scores! I started when I was 6 years old…
Which are your favorite readings?
Everything, I am interested in beautiful writing. For this, there is no limit to era or language, only the intrinsic quality of the text.
Which city or cities do you relate to the most?
Venice, New York. I know they are extremely different, though… It is so.
What’s your favorite color?
I always say “blue.” But sometimes a nice orange-red makes me feel good.
And your favorite flower?
The rose!!!! Or better to say “roses” because there are millions of kinds.
Your favorite conductor(s)?
Bernstein. Kleiber. And my first maestro, Franco Ferrara (although I met him only one year, when I was 18, though he was decisive).
Which is the first record you ever bought?
I had so many at home, all classical music records, but the first one I bought was “The Wall”, Pink Floyd.
The film you love the most?
” Hook “, by Steven Spielberg, also because of the soundtrack.
Your favorite season and why?
Spring, because only here can you see the creative power of nature.
How’s your attitude towards TV?
I only use television to watch movies. When I spend months in hotels, I never touch the remote control.
How is your relationship with politics?
Prudent. I cannot find a personality today that would make me want to “do'” politics. Maybe at the local level, yes. For example, I’d like to run for mayor of my small village where I have my country house.
Do you have causes that are very important for you?
Justice. Everything else depends on that, including the problems of our relationship with nature.
Day or night?
Night.
Which is the situation you consider the most relaxing?
Being with friends in a good restaurant.
Tell us your ideal day.
Writing music in the morning, in the afternoon going to direct the piece I wrote in the morning, and in the evening celebrating it all at a good tavern.
What’s the soundtrack to your everyday life?
As a musician, obviously that changes every day.
Your favorite, among your compositions, and why?
I have many favorite compositions, in fact a “favorite” piece can become torture if it is repeated over and over again. Whereas for music, as for everything else, diversity is necessary.
The holiday or the trip you’d like to take?
Visiting Africa. But it is too big for a lifetime.
How would you define your relation with food ?
I love eating and cooking. I can’t imagine life without food.
Mediterranean diet, microbiotics or fast food?
Mediterranean all my life.
Your favorite dish?
The “bouillabaisse”.
Can you cook? What’s your specialty? And what’s the dish you cook more often?
“Bouillabaisse.” But it’s long and complicated. I also make different ways of chicken.

Red exclusively.

Absolutely yes.
What would you like a person who does not know your art to listen to?
My opera “Monte Cristo”.
If you were granted the chance to choose an opera to conduct, which one would it be?
Richard Strauss’s “Die Frau ohne Schatten”.
Do you enjoy success? To what extent?
I like it because it gives freedom to choose so many things: titles, artists to work with, and enough time to do it. But I see today that those who are most successful no longer have time to work and rehearse.
What do you do an hour prior to going in the pit?
Always different. It depends on the day.
What’s never missing in your dressing room?
Water.

Your mood at the moment?
Impatience, as always. I’m always impatient to write music.

I invented it: “I am always happy to be busy since I am busy being happy.
