Sono del segno del Cancro, perciò cerco sempre di crearmi uno cerchio sicuro attorno a me, e lo faccio in ogni città dove dirigo. Cerco amicizie, alberghi e luoghi dove posso ritornare e sentirmi come a casa. Sto scoprendo col tempo di essere molto sensibile e molto protettivo nei confronti di chi mi è vicino.

È una persona spirituale? E se si, in che modo?
Lo sono ma in maniera piuttosto personale; credo molto nel Karma e medito appena posso.
Ha mai invidiato qualcuno? E se si, chi?
Gli sportivi professionisti che possono dedicarsi completamente allo sport e alla loro salute, e dormire il pomeriggio tra gli allenamenti.
Che lavoro avrebbe fatto, se non fosse diventato un direttore d’orchestra?
Amo profondamente viaggiare, e più che lo scoprire posti nuovi, che è comunque qualcosa di bellissimo, amo l’atto vero e proprio dello spostarsi da un punto all’altro. Sarei diventato probabilmente un pilota d’aerei o un diplomatico. L’importante è stare in alta quota.
La sua famiglia ha influenzato le sue scelte?
Hanno provato in tutti i modi a farmi cambiare idea quando avevo capito di voler fare il musicista, ma una volta compreso che era una decisione irrevocabile, mi hanno supportato.
Qual è il suo ricordo più caro?
Probabilmente quando mi hanno detto che avrei studiato con Riccardo Muti; è stata una delle esperienze più incredibili e costruttive che abbia mai fatto.
Qual è il momento in cui si è sentito più orgoglioso?
Quando ho potuto dirigere per la prima volta un opera di Verdi in buca. Ricordo ancora l’emozione profonda durante il mio primo Rigoletto.
Qual è la sua più grande delusione?
Aver trascurato lo sport da adolescente e durante gli anni di studio. Non avevo ancora chiaro quanto lo sport sia importante per la crescita sociale e fisica di una persona.
C’è qualcosa che manca nella sua vita attualmente? E se si, cosa?
Del buon sonno su un buon letto e un posto in campagna dove scappare e poter studiare con calma.
Si emoziona facilmente?
Troppo facilmente… Puccini è un problema se sono a teatro da spettatore. Quando lo dirigo sono ammaliato dallo storytelling incredibile delle sue opere.
Che cosa le fa più paura?
Le menzogne, ho difficolta ad abituarmici e a capirne la ragione.Che Cosa considera noioso?

Che cosa la fa ridere di cuore?
L’ironia del mio amico Valerio e del mio agente Federico e la serie “The Office”.
Crede di più nell’amore o nell’amicizia?
L’amicizia è la cosa più importante che conosca e che cerco di salvaguardare ad ogni costo.
Ha un sogno ricorrente?
Ne ho alcuni legati proprio ad essere pilota d’aerei o diplomatico che ritornano spesso, e in tutti c’è sempre di mezzo un aereo o un aeroporto.
Quanto conta per lei il denaro?
Il giusto. I miei genitori mi hanno insegnato a spendere ma non a sprecare denaro.
In che cosa è più spendaccione?
Per il mio cane non credo di aver mai badato a spese, ma non scherzo nemmeno per borsoni e zaini.
Colleziona qualcosa? E se si, come ha iniziato questa collezione?
Ahimè no, vorrei tanto collezionare auto d’epoca ma non avrei il tempo di guidarle e perciò sarebbe completamente inutile.
Quali sono le sue letture preferite?
Leggo tanti saggi sulle relazioni internazionali; quel mondo mi affascina.
Quale o quali città sente più vicine al suo modo di essere?
Stoccolma perché è elegante e calma. Ci sono stato tante volte da studente e da direttore e mi ha sempre voluto bene. Un anno fa ho scoperto Rimini e mi ci sono perdutamente innamorato. La trovo la città perfetta sotto tanti punti di vista.
Qual è il suo colore preferito?
Blu notte.
E il suo fiore preferito?
Una specie di campanula che cresce selvatica nel giardino dei miei nonni, non credo abbia un nome…
Cantante/i preferito/i?
Fabio Concato e Tito Gobbi. Concato accompagna i miei viaggi mentre Tito Gobbi è stato uno dei primi interpreti lirici che mi abbia completamente stregato.
Direttore/i preferito/i?
Herbert von Karajan: ho ancora il poster nella mia camera a casa dei miei genitori.
Qual è il primo disco che ha comprato?
Una raccolta su Charlie Parker: sono un amante perso del Jazz, e più è sperimentale, più mi piace.
Il film che ha amato di più?
Independence day e Caccia a Ottobre Rosso: sono due film che vedevo a casa con mio nonno. Ora sono due film d’azione un po’ impolverati ma che riguardo ancora con piacere e che evocano ricordi.
La sua stagione preferita e perché?
La tarda primavera, noi ci apriamo alla natura e lei ricambia abbracciandoci… e grazie al cielo non sono allergico al polline.
Com’è il suo rapporto con la tecnologia e qual è il gadget elettronico di cui non può fare a meno?
Vorrei tornare all’analogico, ma mi sono abituato ad avere tutto il necessario dell’uomo del 2022. Ho ricevuto in regalo uno smartwatch sportivo quest’estate e ne sono dipendente.
Qual è il suo atteggiamento verso la televisione?
Vorrei avere modo di guardarla di più, ma sono pochissimo a casa. Ascolto tantissimo la radio che ho scoperto avere una capacità evocativa incredibile. Con la radio usiamo l’immaginazione molto di più rispetto alla televisione.
Com’è il suo rapporto con la politica?
Sono profondamente appassionato di politica e da adolescente era una delle mia passioni più profonde, ma non credo sia il momento per parteciparvi in maniera attiva.
Ha delle cause che le stanno particolarmente a cuore?
I cani randagi del sud Italia. Ce ne sono milioni, in gran parte abbandonati, che sognano una famiglia. Io ne ho uno con me che amo profondamente.

Giorno, senza ombra di dubbio
Qual è la situazione che considera più rilassante?
Camminare in campagna o al mare col mio cane… il telefono a casa.
Ci racconti la sua giornata ideale.
Ideale? Fare una nuotata al mare col mio cane prima di colazione e poi un caffè con gli amici. Palestra o allenamenti di nuoto e poi pranzo con i nonni, e studio il pomeriggio. Bere un bicchiere di vino dopo cena con Valerio e Daniele.
Qual è la colonna sonora della sua vita di tutti i giorni?Qualsiasi cosa cantata da Fabio Concato va benissimo.
La vacanza o il viaggio che vorrebbe fare?
Vorrei vedere la Siria e tornare in Russia. Credo che aspetterò un po’ per entrambe.
Come definirebbe il suo rapporto col cibo?
Felice! Amo cucinare per gli ospiti ma se sono solo mangio piuttosto frugalmente.
Dieta mediterranea, cucina macrobiotica o fast food?
Dieta mediterranea senz’ombra di dubbio. Continuo a cucinare pugliese nonostante non ci viva più da 15 anni.
Il suo piatto preferito?
Le seppie ripiene al forno che mia nonna cucina ogni volta che torno a casa. Che atterri la mattina alle 8 o la notte alle due, sono sicuro di trovarle nel forno.
Sa cucinare? Qual è la sua specialità? E qual è il piatto che cucina più spesso?
So cucinare, e sono bravissimo coi risotti. Anche se la cosa che faccio più spesso, da buon pugliese, sono le polpette al sugo.
Vino rosso o bianco?
Importa solo che sia buono e bevuto con gente a cui tieni.
Qual è il posto in cui la cucina è la peggiore in assoluto?
Ho vissuto tanti anni in Scandinavia e ho iniziato ad apprezzare anche le lasagne col sugo alla bolognese e salmone insieme. Ho perso i freni inibitori.
La musica è stata una vocazione?
Ho amato la musica dal primo secondo in cui ci sono venuto a contatto. Ho cercato in ogni modo che fosse parte della mia vita e che si integrasse bene con le altre mie passioni e desideri. Adesso, dopo quasi vent’anni, la musica è una compagna con cui programmare le prossime fasi della vita.
Cosa vorrebbe che una persona che non conosce la sua arte ascoltasse?
Un disco di Stan Getz, un balletto di Čajkovskij, un notturno di Chopin, un concerto per pianoforte di Mozart. Basta uno di questi per perdersi completamente. Sono stati questi i primi dischi che ho posseduto e che ascolto ancora volentieri. Mi sono innamorato della musica con questa musica e la raccomando a tutti.
Come tiene sotto controllo l’evoluzione della sua tecnica direttoriale?
Quando posso mi registro o chiedo le registrazioni video. È molto utile continuare a capire come migliorarsi e come essere più chiari nel gesto.
Se le fosse concesso di scegliere un’opera da dirigere, quale sarebbe?
LOHENGRIN! La più bella di tutte.
Le piace il successo? Fino a che punto?
Non credo sia la parola più giusta, ma soprattutto non credo sia una cosa fondamentale. Non amo particolarmente chi non capisce che anche un artista ha una sfera privata fuori dal palcoscenico, che potrebbe non voler condividere.
Che cosa fa un’ora prima di salire sul podio?
Se non mi sono dimenticato di stirare le camicie di solito faccio dello stretching, medito e provo a ripassare mentalmente la partitura.
Che cosa non manca mai nel suo camerino?
I gemelli che mi hanno regalato i miei amici del conservatorio il giorno del diploma.
Che cosa pensa quando si guarda nello specchio?
Gioca semplice e testa bassa.
Il suo umore al momento?
Tranquillo, ho l’arrosto in forno.
Qual è il suo motto?
È un proverbio finlandese che mi ha stregato:”I cani abbaiano ma i treni continuano a correre”.

What is your star sign? Do you recognize yourself in its features?
I am a Cancer, and therefore I always try to create a secure circle around me, and I do it in every town or city where I conduct. I look for friends, hotels and places where I can come back and feel like at home. Over the years I am discovering that I am very sensitive and protective towards those who are close to me.
Are you superstitious? And if yes, about what? Is there any particular ritual related?
I am quoting my favorite series. (The Office): “I am not superstitious, but I am a little stitious”.
Are you a spiritual person? And if yes, in what way?
I am, but in a quite personal way. I believe very much in Karma, and meditate whenever I can.
Have you ever envied someone? And if yes, who?
Professional sport players who can completely devote themselves to sports and their health, and sleep in the afternoon when they are not training.
What would you have done, hadn’t you become an opera singer?
I adore traveling, and more than discovering new places – which is something marvelous to begin with – I love the very action of moving from one place to another. I would have probably become an airplane pilot or a diplomat. The important thing is being at a high altitude.
Did your family influence your choices?
They tried in every possible way to make me change my mind when I realized I wanted to be a musician, but once they understood it was an irrevocable decision, they supported me.
Which is your most cherished memory?
Probably when I was told I’d study with Riccardo Muti; it was one of the most incredible and constructive experiences I’ve ever had.
What’s the moment you felt the proudest?
When I conducted my first Verdi. I still remember the deep emotion I felt during my first Rigoletto.
What’s your greatest disappointment?
Neglecting sports when I was a teenager and during my studies. It wasn’t yet very clear to me how sports are important for the social and physical growth of a person.
Is there anything missing in your life today? And if yes, what?
Yes, some good sleep on a good bed and a place in the country where I can run off to and be able to study with calm.
Do you get emotional easily?
Too easily… Puccini is a problem if I am in the audience. When I conduct him, I am just fascinated by his incredible storytelling skills.
What are you afraid of the most?
Lies: I can’t get used to them and I don’t understand the reason some people lie.
What do you find boring?
Overtly complicated conversations with no practical implications.
What makes you laugh heartily?
My friend Valerio’s and my agent Federico’s irony and the series “The Office”
Do you believe more in love or friendship?
Friendship is the most important thing I know, and I try to protect it at any cost.
Do you have a recurrent dream?
Yes, I often dream about being a pilot or a diplomat who come back home often, and in each of them there is always a plane or an airport.
How important is money to you?
Moderately important. My parents taught me to spend but to not to squander money.
Which is the item you like spending money on the most?
I spare no expense when it comes to my dog, but I probably spend more than I should in backpacks and duffel bags.
Do you collect anything? And if yes, how did this collection start?
Alas, I don’t! I’d love to collect vintage cars but I wouldn’t have the time to drive them and therefore it’d be completely useless.
Which are your favorite readings?
I read a lot of essays about International relations; that world interests me very much.
Which city or cities do you relate to the most?
Stockholm because it’s elegant and quiet.I was there very often as a student and it has always loved me back as a conductor. Last year I discovered Rimini and I fell madly in love with it. I find it a perfect town under many points of view.
What’s your favorite color?
Midnight blue.
And your favorite flower?
A sort of a bell flower that grows spontaneously in my grandparents’ garden, I don’t think it has a name.
Your favorite singer(s)?
Fabio Concato and Tito Gobbi. Concato accompanies me during my trips while Gobbi was one of the first opera singers to bewitch me completely.
Your favorite conductor(s)?
Herbert von Karajan: I still have his poster in my bedroom at my parents’ house.
Which is the first record you ever bought?
A Charlie Parker collection: I am madly in love with jazz and the more experimental it is, the more I like it.
The film you love the most?
Independence Day and The Hunt for Red October, two movies I used to watch together with my grandfather. Now they are two slightly dusty action films, but I still watch them with pleasure and they bring about some great memories.
Your favorite season and why?
Late spring: we open to nature and she reciprocates hugging us…and thank God I am not allergic to pollen.
How is your relationship with technology and what is the electronic gadget you can’t do without?
I’d like to go back to analog, but I am used to have everything that a person in 2022 needs. I received as a gift a sports smartwatch this summer and now I am addicted to it.
How’s your attitude towards TV?
I’d like to be able to watch it more often, but I am rarely at home. I listen to the radio a lot, because it has incredible evocative skills. With the radio we use much more imagination than with TV.
How is your relationship with politics?
I am deeply passionate about politics and when I was a teenager it was one of fondest passions, but I don’t think it is the time to engage in active politics right now.
Do you have causes that are very important for you?
Stray dogs in Southern Italy. There are millions of them, largely abandoned, who dream to have a family. I have one of them and I love him so much.
Day or night?
Day, undoubtedly.
Which is the situation you consider the most relaxing?
Walking in the country or on the beach with my dog and leaving the phone at home.
Tell us your ideal day.
Ideal day? Swimming in the ocean with my dog before breakfast and then coffee with friends. Gym or again swimming and then lunch with my grandparents, and then study in the afternoon. Drinking a glass of wine after dinner with Valerio and Daniele.
What’s the soundtrack to your everyday life?
Anything sung by Fabio Concato.
The holiday or the trip you’d like to take?
I’d like to visit Syria and return to Russa, but I think I’ll wait a bit longer for both.
How would you define your relation with food ?
A happy one! I love cooking for my guests, but if I am alone I have a frugal meal.
Mediterranean diet, microbiotics or fast food?
Mediterranean diet, no doubt. I still eat Pugliese cooking though I haven’t lived in Puglia for over 15 years.
Your favorite dish?
Baked stuffed squids, which my grandmother cooks whenever I go back home. Whether I land at 2 o’clock in the morning or at 8, I am always sure to find them in the oven.
Can you cook? What’s your specialty? And what’s the dish you cook more often?
I can cook and am very good with risottos. However, as a typical Pugliese, the meal I prepare more often is meatballs with Bolognese sauce.
Red or white wine?
All it matters is that it must be good and shared with the people I love the most.
Which is the place where cooking is the worst ever?
I lived in Scandinavia many years and I even started to appreciate lasagne with Bolognese sauce and salmon together. I have no inhibitions!
Was music a vocation?
I have loved music since the very first moment I found it. I truly wanted it to be part of my life and did all I could so that it would perfectly complement my other passions. Now, after almost twenty years, music is a companion with which to program the next phases of my life.
What would you want someone who doesn’t know your voice to listen to?
A Stan Getz recording, a Tchaikovsky ballet, a Chopin nocturne, a Mozart piano concerto. One of these is sufficient to lose oneself completely into it. These are the first recordings I owned and I still listen to them with enormous pleasure. I fell in love with music through these recordings and I recommended them to everyone.
How do you monitor the evolution of your conducting technique?
Whenever I can, I record myself or ask for video recordings. It is very useful to understand how to improve myself and be clearer in my conducting gestures.
If you were granted the chance to choose an opera to conduct, which one would it be?
LOHENGRIN! The most beautiful of them all.
Do you enjoy success? To which extent?
I don’t think it is the right word, but most of all I don’t think it is a fundamental thing. I don’t particularly like those who don’t understand that even an artist has a private life he or she may not want to share.
What do you do an hour prior to going in the pit?
If I haven’t forgotten to iron my shirts I usually do some stretching, meditate and try to go through the whole score mentally.
What’s never missing in your dressing room?
The cufflinks some friends of mine gave me as a gift the day I graduated.
What do you think of when looking at yourself in the mirror?
Keep it simple and keep your head low.
Your mood at the moment?
It’s relaxed, I have a roast in the oven.
What’s your motto?
It’s a Finnish proverb I find fascinating: “Dogs bark but the caravan goes on”.
