Qual è il suo segno zodiacale? Si riconosce nei suoi tratti salienti?
Sono una Bilancia e mi riconosco davvero in molti dei tratti caratterizzanti del segno. Tendo molto all’equilibrio e alla giustizia in tutte le situazioni.La propensione all’indecisione è un’altra caratteristica nella quale mi riconosco in certe situazioni. Riesco a impiegare un bel po’ di tempo valutando i pro e i contro anche della decisione più semplice… la scelta del negozio di alimentari può essere una vera e propria sfida. Inoltre disprezzo fortemente l’ingiustizia, gli spacconi e il conformismo, il che è perfettamente coerente col mio segno.
È superstiziosa? E se si, riguardo a cosa? Segue qualche particolare rituale a riguardo?
No. Nessuna superstizione o gesti scaramantici
È una persona spirituale? E se si, in che modo?
Non sono spirituale in senso religioso. Riesco, tuttavia, a comprendere il valore della consapevolezza. Fa bene essere in contatto con sé stessi e trovare del tempo per connettersi con la natura. Trovare la tranquillità ad un certo punto della giornata è molto importante per me.
Ha mai invidiato qualcuno? E se si, chi?
Non saprei dire se ho invidiato una persona in particolare.  A volte  invidio le persone che hanno delle vite più lineari. Sarebbe bello dormire nel mio letto più spesso di quanto in realtà faccia. Benefici, come l’assistenza sanitaria (grazie, America…) e la pensione, sarebbero anche una buona cosa.
Che lavoro avrebbe fatto, se non fosse diventata una cantante lirica?
Non saprei. La musica è sempre stata parte della mia vita ed è sembrata come il percorso professionale più ovvio, sin da bambina. Detto ciò, ogni tanto mi fermo a pensare cos’altro mi piacerebbe fare. Una carriera nella giustizia sociale e nella salute femminile sarebbero di particolare interesse per me.
La sua famiglia ha influenzato le sue scelte?
Mi ha semplicemente sostenuto nel mio desiderio di dedicarmi alla musica. Non mi sono mai sentita orientata diversa dalla mia famiglia.
Qual è il profumo che associa alla sua infanzia?
Sono cresciuta in campagna. L’odire dell’erba appena tagliata e del  fieno mi riportano sempre alla mia infanzia.

Qual è il momento in cui si è sentita più orgogliosa?
Uno dei miei momenti di maggior orgoglio è stato quando Ruth Bader Ginsburg ha assistito al mio recital al Kennedy Center. Lei è per me luna grande fonte di ispirazione.
Qual è la sua più grande delusione?
Lo stato attuale della politica americana. Donald Trump è una vera sciagura. La sua presenza alla Casa Bianca è una disgrazia. È riuscito solo ad ampliare  l’odio e l’intolleranza, sia negli USA che all’estero. Il sessismo, il razzismo, l’avversione nei confronti degli intellettuali, i bigottismi sfacciati e violenti che vomita quotidianamente sul mondo vanno al di là dell’umana comprensione. Sostenere  un uomo che mette i bambini in gabbie, desidera negare l’assistenza sanitaria alla gente, promuove la violenza verso le donne, cerca di criminalizzare l’aborto, nega gli aiuti essenziali a Porto Rico, nega attivamente la realtà dei cambiamenti climatici mentre grandi parti del pianeta bruciano. Si permette di scherzare  sulle  Sacre Scritture mentre corteggia il diritto cristiano, mente patologicamente, twitta insulti ai leader mondiali, desidera distruggerei nostri Parchi Nazionali, rimuovere le protezioni acquatiche fondamentali  e poi non sa nemmeno dove si trovi Kansas City? Mi da’ il voltastomaco pensare che quasi la metà della nazione voglia continuare a ignorare queste atrocità. La parola delusione è un termine troppo debole per quello che provo davanti a tutto ciò…
C’è qualcosa che manca nella sua vita attualmente? E se si, cosa?
Se avessi tutto ciò che potrei volere, la vita perderebbe di significato. Non mi manca niente, sono certa che c’è molto altro ancora da scoprire.
Si emoziona facilmente?
Non direi. Nella vita di ogni giorno, mantengo un approccio piuttosto razionale e logico. Quando però mi confronto con questioni di ingiustizia, crudeltà verso uomini o animali, abuso fisico o emotivo, ignoranza, molestie, ecc. mi emoziono profondamente e immediatamente.
Che cosa le fa più paura?
Il fallimento, e lo intendo nel senso più ampio del termine, non solo per quanto riguarda gli obiettivi della mia carriera. Mi piace riuscire in tutto quello che affronto. Può essere stressante cercare di equilibrare questo aspetto di me.
Che cosa considera noioso?
Tutto ciò e tutti coloro che appaiono finti e molto pretenzosi.
Che cosa la fa ridere di cuore?
Scoppio a ridere per le cose più banali. I video di YouTube in cui i gatti si spaventano (purchè non vi sia violenza su di loro) e le persone che inciampano e cadono (ovviamente indolori) mi fanno sorridere.
Crede di più nell’amore o nell’amicizia?
Penso che entrambi i tipi di rapporti siano estremamente preziosi e, ad un certo punto, sono il frutto di una scelta che fai. Istintivamente  si è attratti dalle persone che diventano amori o amici. Alla fine, scegli se valorizzare o meno quei rapporti donando loro il tuo tempo e le tue energie.
Ha un sogno ricorrente?
Sinceramente no. Anche se ogni cantante vive con l’incubo di “dimenticare le parole” o di “aver preparato il pezzo sbagliato”.
Quanto conta per lei il denaro?
Conta, ma non è la cosa più importante. Credo nel meritare un compenso equo per il lavoro che svolgo e che non venga sottovalutato. Detto ciò, sopra tutto c’è la mia salute fisica e mentale, perciò se il carico di lavoro è eccessivo, non penso certo ai soldi.
In che cosa è più spendacciona?
Viaggi ed esperienze sono probabilmente ciò in cui mi piace spendere di più. Tutto ciò che crea un ricordo duraturo credo che valga la pena di spenderci soldi.
Colleziona qualcosa? E se si, come ha iniziato questa collezione?
Nei miei viaggi, mi piace acquistare piccoli oggetti strani. Sulle mensole di casa mia potete trovare di tutto: feticci dei Nativi Americani, scatolette antiche di pillole lassative, minuscole tessere di domino e altro ancora. Mi diverte che la mia collezione attiri l’attenzione di chi frequenta la mia casa.
Quale o quali città sente più vicine al suo modo di essere?
Santa Fe, in New Mexico, è uno dei miei posti preferiti. C’è qualcosa di magico in quel paesaggio.
Qual è il suo colore preferito?
Il verde.

La peonia.

Il film che ha amato di più?
“Spiagge” e “Il Favoloso Mondo di Amélie.”
La sua stagione preferita e perché?
L’autunno, senza dubbio. Il solo pensiero di maglioni, foglie, brezze fredde, sidro di mele e falò mi danno piacere e serenità.
Com’è il suo rapporto con la tecnologia e qual è il gadget elettronico di cui non può fare a meno?
La tecnologia può essere una gran risorsa quando si viaggia. Ho sempre con me i miei laptop, iPad e iPhone. L’ iPhone è ormai essenziale, anche se cerco ogni tanto di allontanarmi dal controllarne lo schermo. È molto facile fare di questa tecnologia una sorta di compagno di vita. Trovo però fondamentale mettere tutto da parte quando sono in compagnia di altre persone. Il mio laptop è essenziale per aggiornare il mio blog fotografico, “ A Singer’s Suitcase”.
Com’è il suo rapporto con la politica?
Complicato oggigiorno posizionarsi politicamente. Direi che sono una Democratica Liberale. Credo che la domanda sulla delusione più grande riassuma abbastanza i miei attuali sentimenti al riguardo. Ne riparliamo a Novembre…
Ha delle cause che le stanno particolarmente a cuore?
Sono una sostenitrice attiva di Planned Parenthood, Human Rights Campaign e ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union, ndt].
Giorno o notte?
Dipende da dove mi trovo e dal mio umore del momento. Per natura tendo a essere più una creatura notturna, ma c’è qualcosa di magico nel guardare il sole che sorge e nell’assaporarne la tranquillità prima che il mondo si svegli.
Qual è la situazione che considera più rilassante?
A casa mia.
Qual è la colonna sonora della sua vita di tutti i giorni?
Ho quattro playlist che alterno nell’ascolto, a seconda dell’umore. Quella che ascolto di più si intitola “Morning Mix” e include I miei brani preferiti di Dusty Springfield, Etta James, Sarah Vaughan, e Judy Garland. La “Yes, Please” include Slash, The Heavy, Jeff Beck, James Gang, e Styx. La “Moody” contiene canzoni di by Hozier, Iron & Wine, Tim Minchin, Kesha, Bruno Mars, e Macklemore. Se sono in macchina e voglio ascoltare della musica divertente che mi tenga sveglia, ascolto la “Party” che include The Beatles, Queen, Missy Elliot, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, Ben Folds, ecc… Sono piuttosto eclettica nei gusti e tendo ad ascoltare cose che non mi ricordino del lavoro. Se dovessi ascoltare musica classica, generalmente, tenderei alla musica sinfonica.
La vacanza o il viaggio che vorrebbe fare?
Ho viaggiato in tutto il mondo, ma non sono ancora stata alle Hawaii. Spero di andarci molto presto.
Come definirebbe il suo rapporto col cibo?
Etico. Amo il cibo e mi piace provarne di nuovoi. Sono una consumatrice coscienziosa e faccio del mio meglio per supportare sistemi di produzione alimentare che credo siano sostenibili e umani. A casa, sono vegana. Quando viaggio, sono flessibile e divento vegetariana. Eccezionalmente, in rare occasioni, se ne conosco la provenienza e si tratta di pesce locale e da allevamenti sostenibili, mangio crostacei e frutti di mare.
Dieta mediterranea, cucina macrobiotica o fast food?
Nessuna delle tre.
Il suo piatto preferito?
La mia cucina preferita in assoluto è quella etiope. Non riesco a pensare a niente di meglio di una sperlunga di assaggino vegetariani del mio ristorante preferito di Chicago, l’Ethiopian Diamond.
Sa cucinare? Qual è la sua specialità? E qual è il piatto che cucina più spesso?
Amo cucinare, in particolare diversi tipi di zuppe. Il  mio cavallo di battaglia  è lo sformato di cavolfiore con cavolo giapponese croccante e pinoli. È assolutamente delizioso!
Vino rosso o bianco?
Non mi sembra giusto sceglierne per forza solo uno!
Qual è il posto in cui la cucina è la peggiore in assoluto?
Gli hotel serviti dal servizio catering..No, grazie.
La musica è stata una vocazione?
Si. Sin dalla tenera età, la musica è stata il mio interesse. Suonavo il piano e poi ho studiato canto. Il tutto nella massima natueralezza.
Cosa vorrebbe che una persona che non conosce la sua voce ascoltasse?
Vorrei  semplicemente trasmettere e far vivere le emozioni che provo mentre canto.
Come tiene sotto controllo l’evoluzione della sua voce?
La percepisco. Quando fai del tuo corpo il tuo strumento musicale, diventi estremamente conscia di ogni piccolo cambiamento. Un pezzo che cantavi anni fa, potrebbe improvvisamente non essere più adatto a te. Devi esaminare te stessa, il tutto il tuo repertorio e rivalutare ciò che meglio mette in mostra le tue capacità. Cosa ti permette di comunicare efficacemente in questa fase della tua vita?
Se le fosse concesso di scegliere un ruolo da cantare, quale sarebbe?

Le piace il successo? Fino a che punto?
Mi rende orgogliosa guadagnarmi il rispetto degli addetti ai lavori per la qualità del mio lavoro, il tipo di collega che sono e vedere quel rispetto e quella fiducia riflessi nei contratti che mi permettono di lavorare sempre a un livello alto. Se il successo si misura in follower su Twitter o Instagram, la cosa mi interessa poco. Amo condividere una singola esperienza musicale DAL VIVO con il pubblico, in un teatro e sentire l’immediata risposta del pubblico alla musica. Questo è il successo che amo.
Che cosa fa un’ora prima di salire sul palco?
Arrivo minimo due ore prima di andare in scena. Fare le cose di fretta non è contemplato nella mia impostazione lavorativa: cerco di bere sempre molto, ripasso la parte con calma, già truccata e in costume.
Che cosa non manca mai nel suo camerino?
Se posso decidere io, un pianoforte.
Che cosa pensa quando si guarda allo specchio?
“Che ora è?”. Se mi sto guardando allo specchio, significa che mi sto preparando per la giornata che mi aspetta.
Il suo umore al momento?
Sto lavorando sul sentirmi più a mio agio nel correre rischi e non cercare di avere sempre il controllo su tutto. Ho capito che talvolta la crescita può avvenire solo se ti allontani dalla tua comfort zone.
Qual è il suo motto?
Ascolta più di quanto parli. Fai sempre più di quanto ci si aspetti da te. Metti sincerità, vulnerabilità e verità nella tua arte… dai tutta te stessa, ma non cercare di accentrare tutto su di te.

Define yourself with three adjectives…
Honest. Intuitive. Determined. 
What is your star sign? Do you recognize yourself in its features?
I am a Libra, and do recognize a lot of the sign’s traits in myself. I am very focused on balance and fairness in all situations. The propensity toward indecision is also something I can relate to in certain situations. I can spend a good bit of time weighing the pros and cons of even the tiniest decision…grocery stores can be a challenge. I also strongly dislike injustice, loudmouths, and conformity, which falls squarely in line with my star sign.
Are you superstitious? And if yes, about what? Is there any particular ritual related?
I am not superstitious.
Are you a spiritual person? And if yes, in what way?
I wouldn’t call myself a spiritual person per se, and certainly not in a religious sense. I do, however, see the value in mindfulness. It is good to check in with yourself and find moments to connect with nature. Finding stillness at some point each day is very important to me.
Have you ever envied someone? And if yes, who?
I can’t say I’ve ever envied a particular person. There are times that I am envious of people who have more straightforward lives. It would be nice to sleep in my own bed more often than not. Benefits, like healthcare (thanks, America…) and a pension, would also be nice.
What would you have done, hadn’t you become an opera singer? I really don’t know. Music has always been a part of my life and seemed like the obvious career path, from a very early age. That said, I do consider from time to time what else I might like to do. Careers in social justice and women’s health are of particular interest to me.
Did your family influence your choices? Only in the sense that they supported my desire to pursue music. I never felt pushed in any one direction by my family.
What’s the smell you associate with your childhood? I grew up in the country. Freshly cut grass and/or hay will always take me back to my childhood.
What’s the moment you felt the proudest?
One of my proudest moments was having Ruth Bader Ginsburg attend my recital at the Kennedy Center. She is such an inspiration.
What’s your greatest disappointment?
The current state of American politics. Donald Trump is a disgrace. His White House is a disgrace. He has only served to amplify hate and intolerance, both in the US and abroad. The blatant and violent sexism, racism, antiintellectualism, bigotry, etc. that he spews on the daily to the world is beyond comprehension. What type of person supports a man that puts children in cages, wishes to deny people healthcare, promotes violence toward women, seeks to criminalize abortion, denies critical aid to Puerto Rico, actively denies the reality of climate change while large portions of the planet burn, makes a joke about scripture while courting the Christian right, lies pathologically, tweets insults at world leaders, wishes to destroy our National Parks, removes critical water protections, and doesn’t even know where Kansas City is located? It sickens me that almost half of the nation still wishes to ignore these atrocities. Disappointment hardly covers it…

Is there anything missing in your life today? And if yes, what?
f I had everything that I could possibly want, life would lose meaning. Nothing is missing, but I’m certain there is more to be found.
Do you get emotional easily?
Not really. In everyday situations, I maintain a pretty rational and logical approach to things. That said, when I am confronted with issues of injustice, cruelty to humans or animals, physical or emotional abuse, ignorance, harassment, etc. I feel deeply and immediately.
What are you afraid of the most?
Failure, and I mean that broadly, not just in terms of career goals. I like to be successful in everything I attempt. It can be stressful trying to balance that aspect of myself.
What do you find boring?
Anything/anyone that appears fake or full of pretense.
What makes you laugh heartily? I crack up at pretty random things. YouTube videos of cats getting scared (if they aren’t of an abusive nature) and people tripping or running into things (if they aren’t seriously injured) tend to give me the giggles.
Do you believe more in love or friendship?
I think both relationships are of extreme value and, at some point, are both a choice that you make. You are instinctively drawn to people as friends or lovers, and you eventually choose to value those relationships with your time and energy, or not. In the best relationships, both people choose to give equally.
Do you have a recurrent dream?
No, although, I think every performer has had the “forgotten words” or “prepared the wrong piece of music” dream.

How important is money to you?
It is important, but not the MOST important thing. I believe in being compensated fairly for the work that I do and not allowing my contributions to be undervalued. That said, I value my sanity and health above all, so if the workload is too much, I will pass on a paycheck in order to feel balanced.
Which is the item you like spending money on the most?
I don’t have a specific weakness. Travel and experiences are probably what I enjoy spending money on the most. Anything that creates a lasting memory is worth spending money on, in my opinion.
Do you collect anything? And if yes, how did this collection start?
I have an antique printers tray that hangs on a wall in my home. In the course of my travels, I pick up very small items that are somewhat odd in nature. You will find anything from Native American fetishes to antique laxative pills to miniature dominoes on the shelves. It is fun bringing little treasures home from all over the world. I like that the collection piques the curiosity of people who take the time to look.
Which city or cities do you relate to the most?
Santa Fe, NM is one of my favorite places. There is something magical about the landscape. I also enjoy the London theatre scene.
What’s your favorite color?
Green.

Your favorite season and why?
Fall, hands down. The very thought of sweaters, leaves, crisp breezes, apple cider, and campfires brings a smile to my face.
How is your relationship with technology and what is the electronic gadget you can’t do without?
Technology can be a great asset when traveling. I always have my laptop, iPad, and iPhone with me. My iPhone is probably the most essential item, although I try to take some breaks from staring at the screen. It is so easy to make these gadgets a companion, of sorts, and I really try to keep technology on the sidelines whenever I am in the company of others. My laptop is essential equipment for updating my photo blog, “ A Singer’s Suitcase”, but I can easily set it aside.
How is your relationship with politics?
Labels are getting a bit troublesome these days, but I’ll go with Liberal Democrat. I think the question regarding disappointment pretty much sums up my feelings on things at the moment. Check back in with me this November…
Do you have causes that are very important for you?
I am an active supporter of Planned Parenthood, Human Rights Campaign, and the ACLU.
Day or night?
Depends on where I am and my current mood. I am naturally more of a night person, but there is something magical about watching the sun rise and savoring the stillness before the rest of the world wakes up.
Which is the situation you consider the most relaxing?
Being at home.
What’s the soundtrack to your everyday life?
I have four playlists that I rotate between, depending on my mood. My most played list is called “Morning Mix” and includes favorites by Dusty Springfield, Etta James, Sarah Vaughan, and Judy Garland. My “Yes, Please” list includes Slash, The Heavy, Jeff Beck, James Gang, and Styx. My “Moody” list has songs by Hozier, Iron & Wine, Tim Minchin, Kesha, Bruno Mars, and Macklemore. If I’m in the car and want fun things to keep me awake, I play my “Party” list that includes The Beatles, Queen, Missy Elliot, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, Ben Folds, etc.. As you can see, I’m pretty eclectic in my taste and tend to listen to things that don’t remind me of work. If I do listen to classical music, I will generally turn to orchestral music.
The holiday or the trip you’d like to take?
I’ve travelled all over the world, but still have not yet made it to any of the Hawaiian Islands. I hope to take this trip in the very near future.
How would you define your relation with food?
Ethical. I love food and enjoy trying new things. That said, I am a conscientious consumer and do my best to vote with my dollar for the systems of food production
that I believe are sustainable and humane. At home, I am vegan. On the road, I am flexible to vegetarian. On exceptionally rare occasions, if I know from where the seafood is sourced and it is local and sustainable, I will have shellfish.
Mediterranean diet, macrobiotics or fast food?
None of the above.
Your favourite dish?
My favorite food of all time is Ethiopian. I can think of nothing better than a vegetarian sampler platter, especially from my favorite Chicago restaurant, Ethiopian Diamond.
Can you cook? What’s your specialty?
And what’s the dish you cook more often? I can cook. If I have a recipe, I’m good to go. It is a boring answer, but I really like to make different kinds of soup. That said, my showstopper dish for guests is a cauliflower sformato with crispy kale and pine nuts. It is absolutely delicious!
Red or white wine?
It really doesn’t seem right to pick just one.
Which is the place where cooking is the worst ever?
Hotels with efficiency kitchens. No thanks.
Was music a vocation?
Yes. From a very early age, music was my focus. I played piano and then studied voice. It all followed a natural progression.

What would you want someone who doesn’t know your voice to listen to?
The intention behind my words. Just listen to what I am saying and feel it with me.
How do you monitor the evolution of your voice?
I feel it. When your body is your instrument, you become very in tune with even little changes. A piece that you sang 5-10 yrs ago, might all of a sudden feel less or more comfortable. You have to check in with yourself. Sing through old and new repertoire and reassess what best showcases your abilities. What can you communicate best with at this time?
If you were granted the chance to chose a role, which one would it be?
Mama Rose in July Styne and Stephen Sondheim’s Gypsy.
Do you enjoy success? To which extent?
I take pride in earning respect in the industry for the quality of work that I produce, the type of colleague that I am, and having that respect and trust reflected in contracts that enable me to work at a consistently high level. If success is reflected in numbers of Twitter or Instagram followers, I have little interest. Sharing a singular musical experience with an audience LIVE in a theater and feeling the immediate human response to the music and storytelling is what I love. That is success, and that is what I enjoy.
What do you do an hour prior to going on stage?
I arrive at the theater a minimum of two hours before curtain. Rushing is not a part of my process, ideally. An hour prior to going on stage, I will be calmly hydrating and going over my text, with makeup finished and costume in place.
What’s never missing in your dressing room?
If I have my way, a piano.
What do you think of when looking at yourself in the mirror?
“What time is it?” If I’m looking in the mirror, I must be getting ready for the day ahead.
Your mood at the moment?
I am working on being more comfortable with taking chances and letting go of control. It has occurred to me that sometimes growth can only occur when we step outside of our comfort zone.
What’s your motto?
Listen more than you speak. Always do more than is expected of you. Bring sincerity, vulnerability, and truth to your art…give all of yourself, but never make it about you.
