Con oggi GBOpera inaugura una nuova serie di interviste, “tenuta a battesimo” dal soprano di fama internazionale Hibla Gerzmava, vincitrice del Grand Prix all’International Tchaikovsky Competition, che ritorna a cantare alla Carnegie Hall in un recital su musiche di Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Hahn e Fauré, oltre ad arie da Anna Bolena, La Forza del Destino e Il Trovatore.
Cominciamo! Ci racconti le sue preferenze…
1) Social media?
Instagram (@hiblagerzmava). Mi piace leggere i commenti dei miei fan da tutto il mondo. Posto video dai luoghi che visito quando sono in tour e mi è stato chiesto di postare più video tratti da concerti e prove. Il pubblico ama vedermi dietro le quinte e nella vita di tutti i giorni con i miei amici, mio figlio, la mia famiglia e il mio gatto British, Amore. Io seguo alcuni stilisti, i miei colleghi e amici. Ci lasciamo commenti l’un l’altro e reciprocamente gli’“in bocca al lupo.”
2) Piatto?
Amerei i piatti saporiti. Sfortunatamente, sono quasi sempre a dieta e consumo pasti preparati appositamente in buste in dosi prestabilite. 
Non devo superare le 800 calorie!…Durissima se lavoro in Italia…Amo la cucina italiana. Il risotto al tartufo è uno dei miei primi piatti preferiti.
3) Compositore?
Difficile sceglierne solo uno. In questo momento della mia carriera, canto molto Verdi: Otello, Don Carlo, La Forza del Destino, Il Trovatore. La prossima stagione debutterò in Aida al Metropolitan Opera di New York.
4) Vacanza?
Solitamente posso concedermi solo tre settimane ad Agosto per poter permettermi delle vere vacanze. La scorsa estate sono stata a Forte dei Marmi. Qui sono stata veramente bene!. Amo nuotare e frequentare centri benessere, ma non amo il caldo afoso e non prendo il sole. Vado in bicicletta e pratico nordic walking. Apprezzo molto anche la montagna. Mi concedo dei brevi soggiorni invernali a St. Moritz, in Svizzera. Per me, sono più importanti l’atmosfera, la compagnia e il silenzio del posto in sé! Niente canto, parlo poco, mi rilasso e dormo molto.
5) Pizza?
Tutte le variazioni attorno alla Margherita: La mia preferita in assoluto è la “Quattro Formaggi” !
6) Gelato?
La storia che non è permesso ai cantanti lirici mangiare il gelato è uno stereotipo! Quando sono in Italia, faccio uno strappo alla dieta e me lo concedo!!!! Vaniglia e mango sono i gusti che amo particolarmente.
7) Personaggio operistico?
Le eroine che interpreto sono mie “amiche.” Se dicessi che voglio più bene a una che all’altra, le offenderei. Tutte donne dai caratteri forti, drammaticiamente dolenti e pressochè destinate a una inesorabile morte: Desdemona, Anna Bolena, Medea, Leonora (da Il Trovatore e La Forza del Destino), Elisabetta di Valois…. Qualche anno fa mio figlio (aveva sei anni) mi disse: “Mamma, mi piace quando canti L’elisir d’amore. Qui almeno non muori!.”
8) Colazione?
Raramente la faccio. Bevo un bicchiere d’acqua e due tazze di caffé.
9) Stilista?
Amo la moda ed essere elegante. Indosso abiti da concerto esclusivi. Molti sono creati da un talentuoso stilista russo: Aleksander Terekhov. Indosso anche abiti di Ulyana Sergeenko, un’altra famosissima stilista russa, e Carolina Herrera. Ho avuto anche la gioia di aver conosciuto Azzedine Alaia, che purtroppo ci ha lasciati due anni fa. Amava la mia voce, la mia pelle bianca come il latte e i miei “occhi gialli”… Ricorderò sempre i nostri incontri. Era un autentico genio. Sono orgogliosa di avere un suo abito esclusivo!
10) Teatro?
Ho iniziato la mia carriera internazionale al Covent Garden di Londra. Vi debuttai come Tatiana in Eugene Onegin. Ogni volta che ci torno, ricordo quel momento della mia vita. Altrettanto importante per me è il Metropolitan Opera di New York. Il pubblico è molto partecipe e si lavora caloroso, splendida l’atmosfera lavorativa!. Non posso però dimenticare il mio debutto scaligero nel 2017 in Anna Bolena. Una sfida sfida enorme, l’opera mancava da queste scene da trentacinque anni (l’ultima volta fu con Montserrat Caballé). Per me è stato un doppio debutto – prima volta in Scala e prima volta in Bolena. Un importatante traguardo di cui vado molto fiera! Tornerò alla scala nel Gennaio 2021.
11) Mezzo di trasporto?
Passo metà della mia vita tra un aereo e l’altro. Il viaggiare mi da l’opportunità di pensare e riposare, ma anche di studiare partiture nuove.
12) Spettacolo televisivo?
Non ho tempo per guardare la TV. Qualche amico ogni tanto mi manda dei link di qualche intervista interessante o di spettacoli comici.
13) Passione?
Amo il jazz. Ho in progetto un concerto intitolato “Opera & Jazz” – nel quale unire il canto classico a improvvisazioni jazz, affidate a un trio di musicisti.
14) Animale?
Amo i gatti e ne vorrei avere molti. Il mio gatto non ama vedermi in partenza, percepisce quando sono in procinto di partire.
15) Colore?
Amo il rosso in tutte le sue declinazioni. È il colore della forza, dell’amore. 
Amo indossarlo negli abiti da sera, ma anche nel trucco, nello smalto per le unghie. Alle rose rose rosse però, preferisco le bianche.
16) Supereroe?
Non sono una fan dei film fantasy, a mio figlio piacevano Superman e Batman. Da un un punto di vista filosofico, ognuno potrebbe essere un “supereroe” per i suoi amici o per la famiglia. Io posso dire che mio padre era un “supereroe”.
17) Favola?
Amo Cenerentola e Lo Schiaccianoci in ragione dei balletti e della musica meravigliosa di Prokofiev e Tchaikovsky.
18) Attrazione al Luna Park?
Salire su una scena è già “un’attrazione” di per sé. Capita anche che certi allestimenti sono decisamente “estreme”, e mi ritrovo a cantare in cima a una scenografia molto alta o appesa a qualcosa.
19) Attrice o attore?
Sono moltissimi i nomi di grandi attori e attrici del cinema francese, italiano, russo e americano. Ho molti amici attori. Trovo molto interessante, dopo che hanno visto una mia recita, confrontarmi sullo spettacolo e il mio personaggio. Per i cantanti è importante anche essere bravi attori, cantare in modo espressivo ed energico.
20) Ruolo che ha cantato finora?
A tutt’oggi, dopo venticinque anni di carriera, ho cantato più di venti ruoli. Nell’evoluzione della mia voce, alcuni li ho ormai esclusi in favore di altri che vorrò affrontare, come Aida, Norma, Tosca.
21) Letto?
Ho fatto tante interviste nella mia vita, ma questa in particolare è davvero divertente. Il letto migliore è sempre quello di casa! King size o Queen size!
22) Film?
Amo il cinema in costume, biografico, thriller, ma anche le commedie. Quando ho tempo, seguo anche delle serie televisive. Una delle mie preferite è “Mozart in the Jungle,” che racconta i “dietro le quinte” della scena musicale classica newyorkese, con tanto di orchestra, direttore e managers.
23) Automobile?
Purtroppo non guido da molto tempo. Il traffico a Mosca è quasi impossibile da affrontare, Ho comunque un’automobile – una Lexus. Amo molto camminare oppure utilizzo i mezzi pubblici. Quando ho cantato a Zurigo, io e l’intero cast de La Forza del Destino andavamo in teatro in tram.
24) Città europea?
Amo vivere a Mosca, ma anche viaggiare e lavorare nelle città europee: Londra, Milano, Zurigo sono città molto confortevoli, particolarmente vicine al mio stile di vita.
25) Giocattolo quando era una bambina?
Una piccola giraffa di peluche, un regalo di mio padre. Me la portavo ovunque…credo che sia in ancora conservata a casa della mia famiglia.
26) Materia scolastica?
A parte Musica, tutte le materie umanistiche… La Storia, la Letteratura, la Storia dell’Arte.
27) Accessorio?
Le Sciarpe e scialli sono quasi degli accessori quasi essenziali per una cantante. Ne ricevo in dono e ne acquisto. Ne ho molte, di diversi colori, diverse misure e diversi tessuti. Come penso tutte le donne, ho un debole per borse e borsette, occhiali da sole e scarpe.
28) Ristorante?
I ristoranti italiani e giapponesi sono i miei preferiti. A New York, mangio messicano. Qui ho mangiato la migliore salsa guacamole.
29) Indumento?
In primis gli abiti da sera per i concerti o serata di gala. Nella vita di tutti i giorni, preferisco capi casual comodi, in cashmere o lino.
30) Cantante?
La lista sarebbe troppo lunga, sono però tre i nomi che mi hanno ispirata ad avviarmi al canto lirico: Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé e Mario Del Monaco.
31) Marmellata?
Fico e fragola….Pericolissime per la silhouette…
32) Personaggio dei fumetti o dei cartoni animati?
Winnie the Pooh, nell’edizione russa. Tutti i bambini ne conoscevano le canzoni; ancora oggi è un personaggio molto iconico.
33) Motto?
“Vivi per il momento, non per domani”. Se vuoi avere successo devi concentrarti sull’oggi. Non puoi vivere nel passato o nel futuro. Devi vivere concentrato sul presente.
34) Snack?
Lamponi e mirtilli. Salutari, saporiti e con poche calorie.
35) CD?
Quando sono in auto, ascolto musica lounge e jazz.
36) Romanzo?
Fazil Iskander è stato un celebre romanziere dell’Abkhazian. Scriveva in russo e molti dei suoi lavori sono stati tradotti in molte lingue. Trovo magnico il suo Sandro di Cegem. Il nome di mio figlio è Aleksandr, soprannominato Sandro.
37) Pittore?
Vincent Van Gogh…uno dei miei dipinti preferiti è I Girasoli.
38) Canzone o aria?
Ogni aria che ho cantato è parte della mia anima per sempre. Nei miei concerti amo inserire la “Casta Diva” o “Pace, Pace, mio Dio”.
39) Profumo?
Ne ho molti che uso a seconda del momento o dell’umore, tra i miei preferiti “Vaniglia” di Montale e “Tonka Imperiale” di Guerlain.
40) Gadget elettronico?
Сomputer e smartphone sono parte integrante delle nostre vite. Io uso un MacBook Air e uno smartphone Samsung.

Today GBOpera debuts a new series of interviews, “christened” by internationally renowned soprano Hibla Gerzmava, Grand Prix winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, who returns to Carnegie Hall for a recital of art songs by Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Hahn and Fauré, as well as opera arias taken from Anna Bolena, La Forza del Destino and Il Trovatore.
Let’s start! What’s your favorite…
1) Social media?
Instagram (@hiblagerzmava). I like to read comments from my fans around the world. I post videos from beautiful places on my tours, and I have been asked to post more videos from concerts and rehearsals. People like to see me backstage and in my every day life with my friends, my son, my family, and my British cat, Amore. I also follow some fashion designers, my opera colleagues, and friends. We comment about each other and wish each other “in bocca al lupo.”
2) Dish?
I like tasty food. Unfortunately, I am very often on a diet, and I eat the specially prepared meals in a bag with the dishes pre-measured. You eat only what they give you for 800 calories. When I am working in Italy it’s very difficult since I love Italian food. Risotto al tartufo is one of my favorite pasta courses.
3) Composer?
It’s difficult to choose only one. At this moment in my career, I am singing mostly Verdi operas, such as Otello, Don Carlo, La Forza del Destino, Il Trovatore. Next season I will make my debut in Aida at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
4) Type of holiday?
Usually I have only three weeks in August for my real holiday and relaxation. This year I had a wonderful time at Forte dei Marmi. I prefer to swim, and I enjoy spas, but I do not like oppressive heat, and I never tan. 
I bike ride and do Nordic walking. I like the mountains, too. If I have a winter break for four or five days, I will go to St. Moritz, Switzerland. More important for me than the place is the atmosphere, the company, and the silence! No singing, limited speaking, relaxing and getting plenty of sleep.
5) Pizza?
I like cheese and tomatoes in all variations, but Quattro Formaggi is my very favorite.
6) Ice cream?
It is a stereotype that opera singers are not allowed to eat ice cream! When I am not on a diet, and when I am in Italy, of course I indulge in it!!!! Vanilla and mango flavors are particularly tempting.
7) Operatic character?
I call all my roles and characters my “girls.” If I say that I love one girl more than another, it would be offensive. But naturally, all my characters are strong and dramatic, and all of them are heartbroken and dying in the end – Desdemona, Anna Bolena, Medea, Leonoras (from Il Trovatore and La Forza del Destino), Elisabeth de Valois from Don Carlo. Once when my son was 6 years old, he told me, “Oh mom, I like when you sing L’elisir d’amore. It’s the only opera where your character is alive in the end.”
8) Breakfast?
In general, I don’t eat breakfast. I drink a glass of water and then two cups of coffee.
9) Fashion designer?
I like fashion, I like to be stylish and elegant. Mostly, I wear the concerts gowns which are made exclusively for me. Most of my concert dresses are made by the talanted Russian designer, Aleksander Terekhov. I also wear dresses by Ulyana Sergeenko, another very famous Russian designer, and Carolina Herrera. I am proud to have known Azzedine Alaia, who sadly passed away two years ago. He used to say he appreciated “my voice, my white ‘milk’ skin and yellow eyes”… I will always remember my meetings with him. He was a genius. He once created an exclusive dress for me, and I cherish the other dresses from his collections.
10) Theater?
The first theatre where I began my international career was the Royal Opera House in London. I came there to perform Tatiana in Eugene Onegin. Every time I return to this theatre, I remember those moments in my life. Another very important theatre in my career is the Metropolitan Opera in New York. There is a very warm audience, a great working atmosphere, and very beautiful performances. Of course, I will never forget my debut at La Scala in 2017 in Anna Bolena. It was a huge challenge as this had not been presented on the stage at La Scala for 35 years (the last time was with Montserrat Caballé). It was a double debut for me – first time on stage at the house and first time performing the role. It was very successful, and I am very proud of the experience! I am looking forward to returning to La Scala in January 2021.
11) Means of transport?
Half of our lives we spend in airplanes. It’s a good opportunity for me to think and sleep. And I study scores and new parts in flight as well.
12) TV show?
I don’t have time to watch TV. Sometimes friends send me links to interesting interviews or comedy shows.
13) Passion?
My passion is jazz. I have my own project – a crossover concert program entitled “Opera & Jazz” – in which I bring together classical singing styles with jazz improvisation alongside the trio jazz band.
14) Animal?
I love cats, and I wish I had more than one. My cat Amore doesn’t like when I am packing my luggage. He can sense that I am going away.
15) Colour?
I like the color red – its strong and powerful, but at the same time, it is the color of love, such as red hearts. I like red concerts gowns and red manicures, but I don’t like red roses, I prefer white.
16) Superhero?
I am not a fan of all fantasy movies, but I remember that my son liked Superman and Batman. But if we look philosophically at this question, every person might be a superhero to his friends or family. For me, my father was a superhero.
17) Fairy tale?
I like Cinderella and Nutcracker because of the wonderful ballets and music of Russian composers Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky.
18) Attraction in a theme park?
For me, going on stage is enough of an attraction. Sometimes productions might be very extreme, singing on top of something high or hanging somewhere.
19) Actress or actor?
There are lots of great and legendary actors and actress from the French, Italian, Russian and American cinema. I have many friends who are actors. It’s very interesting for me when they attend my opera performances, and we discuss the production and my character. Opera singers must be good actors, too, singing with expression and energy.
20) Role you’ve sung so far?
Over the past 25 years of my career I have sung more than 20 roles. Some of them I don’t sing any more, and some new roles are planned for the future, such as Aida, Norma, Tosca.
21) Type of bed?
I have done many interviews in my life, but this particular question is really funny. The best bed is always at home! King size or Queen!
22) Movie?
I prefer different genres of movies. I like period films, biopics, detective films, and comedies as well. On rare occasions when I have time, I will watch a series. One of my favorite is “Mozart in the Jungle,” the American (comic) drama about the inner world of the New York classical music scene, replete with orchestra, a conductor, and managers.
23) Car?
Unfortunately, I have not driven a car in a long time. There is a huge amount of traffic in Moscow, but I do own a car – a Lexus. When I am in Europe I like walking a lot. For example, when I was working in Zurich recently for two and a half months, the whole cast of La Forza del Destino traveled to rehearsal by tram.
24) European city?
I am very satisfied living in Moscow, but I like working and traveling in Europe. London, Milan, Zürich are very comfortable and suitable cities for me. I can imagine living there, too.
25) Toy as a child?
My father brought me a small stuffed giraffe from Germany. That giraffe went with me everywhere. He is still around and is kept somewhere by my relatives.
26) School subject?
Apart from music I preferred the humanities – history, literature, art.
27) Accessory?
Scarfs and shawls are essential accessories for an opera singer. I receive them also from my friends as presents, and I take great pleasure in buying them myself. I have many different colors, sizes, and fabrics. Like all women, I also like bags, sunglasses, and shoes.
28) Restaurant?
Italian and Japan restaurants are my favorite. When I am in New York, I also visit Mexican restaurants. The best guacamole I have ever tried is there.
29) Clothing item?
Of course, concert gowns are the main part. But in every day life, I prefer casual and comfortable cashmere and linen clothes.
30) Singer?
This list can be very long, but I will list the three who inspired me when I was a young girl and first understood that I wanted to be an opera singer: Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé, and Mario Del Monaco.
31) Jam flavor?
Fig and strawberry. But very dangerous for the figure…
32) Comics or cartoon character?
Winnie the Pooh, Russian edition. All children knew the songs; a very iconic character still.
33) Catchphrase?
“Live for today, not for tomorrow”. If you want to succeed you have to focus on the now. You cannot access the past, and you cannot access the future. You can only access the present, so it’s the only thing that you should focus on.
34) Snack?
Raspberries and blueberries. Healthy, tasty and low in calories.
35) CD?
I listen in the car lounge and to jazz CDs.
36) Novel?
Fazil Iskander was a famous Abkhazian author who wrote in Russian, and his books were translated into many languages. He has a wonderful novel, Sandro of Chegem. The name of my son is also Aleksandr but his nickname is Sandro.
37) Painter?
One of my favorite paintings is Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers.
38) Song or aria?
Every aria I have ever sung will be part of my soul forever. I sing some of the most famous and difficult arias such as “Casta Diva” or “Pace, Pace. mio Dio” at my concerts.
39) Perfume?
I have dozens of perfumes I use in the moment or depending on my mood, but I have used Montale Vanilla and Guerlain Tonka Imperiale for many years.
40) Electronic device?
Сomputers and smartphones are an integral part of all of our lives. I use a MacBook Air and a Samsung smart phone.
